Moreshwar Temple

Moreshwar Temple

1 Day

Overview

Moreshwar Temple in Morgaon, Pune district, is the first temple of Ashtavinayak — the eight revered Ganesha shrines in Maharashtra. The temple is linked to the legend of Ganesha defeating demon Sindhu who troubled gods and sages. The current structure was built by the Peshwas in the 14th century, though the original is much older. Built like a fort with four gates and a tall entrance, it reflects Maratha architecture. The idol of Mayureshwar has its trunk turned left, seated with Riddhi and Siddhi, and is smeared with sindoor. A Nandi sits outside, unique as Nandi is usually with Shiva, but here it relates to Shiva giving his bull to Ganesha. Ganesh Jayanti and Maghi Chaturthi are grandly celebrated with palkhis. The temple is the starting and ending point of Ashtavinayak yatra. Moreshwar means “Lord of the Peacock,” Ganesha’s vehicle in this form. The temple radiates strong village-level devotion.
