Overview
Chintamani Temple at Theur, near Pune, is the fifth Ashtavinayak and is linked to the legend of Ganesha retrieving the Chintamani jewel from demon Guna. The temple was built by Madhavrao Peshwa and renovated by his family, who were ardent devotees. The main gate is north-facing, while the idol faces east with a left-turned trunk and diamond eyes. The sabha mandap is wooden with a stone fountain in the center. It is believed that saint Morya Gosavi performed penance here, and his son built the temple. Ganesh Chaturthi and Maghi Utsav draw large crowds from Pune and beyond. The temple sits on the bank of the Mula-Mutha River, adding to its serene setting. Peshwa Madhavrao died in this temple premises, making it historically significant. Chintamani means “remover of worries,” and devotees believe praying here brings peace of mind. The village Theur is considered Ganesha’s own place.
