Rushiabhdev Jain Temple

1 Day

Overview

Rishabhdev Jain Temple, also called Kesariyaji, is near Udaipur in Rajasthan and dedicated to the first Tirthankara, Lord Rishabhdev. Built in the 15th century, it is a major pilgrimage site for Digambar and Shwetambar Jains. The 3.5 ft black stone idol is smeared with saffron or kesar by devotees, giving it the name Kesariyaji. The temple has intricate marble carvings, 52 sub-shrines, and a main shikhara over 80 feet high. Legend says the idol was found by a Bhil tribal and later installed by Jain merchants. Bhils also worship here, calling the deity Kaliya Baba, showing unique communal harmony. Paryushan and Mahavir Jayanti draw huge crowds from across India. The temple treasury is legendary, with offerings of gold, silver, and jewels made over centuries. Architecture blends Maru-Gurjara style with delicate brackets, domes, and toranas. Rishabhdev Temple stands as a symbol of Jain devotion and art.
