Girijatmaj Temple

Girijatmaj Temple

1 Day

Overview

Girijatmaj Temple is the sixth Ashtavinayak, located in Lenyadri caves on a hill near Junnar, Pune. It is unique because it is the only Ashtavinayak temple in a Buddhist cave complex, carved in 1st century CE. Girijatmaj means “son of Girija or Parvati,” as legend says Parvati performed penance here for 12 years to beget Ganesha. The idol is not sculpted separately but is a rock-cut image on the cave wall, with only the head visible. The temple is in Cave 7 of 30 Buddhist caves and requires climbing 307 steps. No formal sanctum or lamp — the cave itself is the shrine. The site offers panoramic views of Kukadi River and Sahyadri ranges. Bhadrapad and Maghi Chaturthi see pilgrims climbing at dawn. Girijatmaj shows harmony of Buddhist and Hindu traditions in one hill. The trek and cave setting make it the most adventurous Ashtavinayak.
