Overview
Juhu Beach stretches 6 km along Mumbai’s western suburbs on the Arabian Sea. Under British rule it became a bungalow zone for elites and later a Bollywood hotspot. After 1947, it turned into Mumbai’s most popular public beach for street food and recreation. Juhu faces erosion and pollution but stays central to the city’s identity. Ganesh Visarjan here draws lakhs of devotees, making it a religious site too. Originally it was an island with Koli fishing villages. JRD Tata flew India’s first commercial flight from Juhu Aerodrome in 1932. Today it’s lined with luxury hotels, Prithvi Theatre, and celeb homes. Sunsets are iconic but swimming is unsafe due to currents. Vendors sell pav bhaji, bhel, gola, and corn all day. Juhu is Mumbai’s “chaupati” — loud, crowded, filmy, and full of life.
