Overview
Ekvira Devi Temple is located right at the entrance of the Karla Caves near Lonavala, Maharashtra. The goddess Ekvira is considered the kuldevi of the Koli community and many Agri and Aagri families in Maharashtra. Though the Karla Caves are 2nd century BCE Buddhist caves, the temple itself was added later, likely in the medieval period. The goddess is worshipped as a form of Renuka, mother of Parashurama. Navratri and Chaitra Purnima are the biggest festivals, when lakhs of Kolis climb the hill barefoot. Animal sacrifice was historically practiced but is now banned, replaced with coconuts and sarees. The temple is simple, with a black stone idol decorated with silver ornaments. From the temple, you get a full view of the ancient Karla chaitya hall behind it. Ekvira represents the blending of Buddhist heritage with local Hindu worship over centuries. The site shows how sacred spaces evolve with community faith.
