Babulnath Temple

Babulnath Temple

1 Day

Overview

Babulnath Temple is one of Mumbai’s oldest Shiva temples, located on a small hillock near Girgaon Chowpatty. The current structure dates to 1890, but the original temple was built in the 12th century by Raja Bhimdev. The Shiva lingam here was buried for centuries and rediscovered when cattle kept pouring milk on a particular spot. The temple is known for its tall shikhara and marble work, rebuilt after the old structure collapsed. Devotees climb around 110 steps or take a lift to reach the main shrine. Mahashivratri sees massive crowds, with special night-long pujas and abhishekams. The temple is managed by a trust and is a key spiritual landmark in South Mumbai. Despite being in a busy city, the hilltop location gives it a calm atmosphere. It is believed that praying here fulfills wishes, especially for health and family. Babulnath remains a symbol of Mumbai’s deep Shaivite tradition.
