Overview
The Vighnahar (or Vigneshwara) Temple in Ozar, Maharashtra, is one of the revered Ashtavinayak shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The temple is famed for its gold-plated shikhara (dome) and its legend of Ganesha defeating the demon of obstacles. The current temple structure was constructed and heavily renovated in 1785 by Chimaji Appa, the military commander of the Peshwa dynasty, after his historic victory over the Portuguese at the Vasai Fort. To celebrate, he famously adorned the temple’s dome with gold. The east-facing temple is enclosed by a large, sturdy stone wall. Its most striking visual features are the glittering golden dome (sonayacha kalash) and the prominent stone lamp pillars (deepmalas) at the entrance.
