Overview
Matheran is a small eco-friendly hill station in Raigad, near Mumbai. It’s India’s only automobile-free hill station, keeping air clean and streets quiet. British officer Hugh Poyntz Malet discovered it in 1850 as a summer retreat. “Matheran” means “forest on the forehead” for its dense tree cover on a hilltop. The UNESCO toy train, red mud roads, and 30+ viewpoints attract visitors. Echo Point, Panorama Point, and Charlotte Lake are most popular spots. No cars allowed — travel is by foot, horse, or hand-pulled rickshaw. Monsoon brings waterfalls and fog-covered valleys across the town. Old British bungalows and cottages still stand among the forests. Rich in birds and monkeys, it stays cool all year. Tourism is the main income for locals seeking peace near Mumbai-Pune.
