Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga

Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga

1 Day

Overview

Grishneshwar Temple, also called Ghushmeshwar, is the 12th Jyotirlinga located near Ellora Caves, Maharashtra. The current structure was rebuilt in the 18th century by Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore after earlier destruction. Built of red basalt stone, it showcases Maratha architecture with a 5-tier shikhara and intricate carvings. Legend tells of a devoted woman Ghushma whose son was killed and revived by Shiva, who then manifested as this lingam. The 24-pillared sabha mandap has carvings of Dashavatara and other deities. Men must remove shirts before entering the garbhagriha, a unique rule here. The temple is small compared to other Jyotirlingas but rich in sculpture. Mahashivratri and Shravan attract huge crowds from Marathwada region. It lies just 1 km from Ellora, so pilgrims often visit both together. Grishneshwar is revered as the place where devotion brought back life, symbolizing Shiva’s compassion.
