Overview
Gorai Beach lies in Borivali West, north Mumbai, near Essel World and Manori. It started as a quiet Koli and East Indian Catholic village, reachable only by ferry for decades. The sand is dark and the water cleaner than Juhu, with fewer hawkers. Historically part of Portuguese Bassein, you’ll see old churches and fort ruins nearby. Gorai boomed in the 1990s after Essel World and Water Kingdom opened. The Global Vipassana Pagoda, built in 2009, now towers over Gorai Creek. Ferries link Gorai to Manori, creating a beach belt popular with locals. East Indian food, seafood stalls, horse rides, and ATVs are common. The area still keeps its village roots despite weekend crowds. Gorai gives you a semi-urban beach feel — more relaxed than Juhu, easier than Alibaug. It’s Mumbai’s quick escape without a long drive.
