Overview
Ballaleshwar Temple in Pali, Raigad, is the only Ashtavinayak temple named after a devotee — Ballal. The legend says young Ballal was a devout Ganesha follower beaten by villagers, and Ganesha appeared to bless him. The original wooden temple was replaced by a stone structure in 1760 by Nana Phadnavis. The east-facing temple is built such that sun rays fall directly on the idol during Dakshinayan and Uttarayan. The idol is 3 feet tall, with its trunk turned left, and has diamonds in the eyes and navel. A large bell donated by Chimaji Appa after defeating the Portuguese hangs here. The temple complex has two lakes and is surrounded by Sahyadri hills. Maghi and Bhadrapad Chaturthi are main festivals with huge local fairs. Unlike other Ashtavinayaks, the prasad here is besan laddu. Ballaleshwar represents the idea that true devotion makes God take the devotee’s name.
