Overview
Parvati created Ganesha from sandalwood paste/dirt to guard her door. Shiva returned, didn’t recognize him, and beheaded him in anger. To calm Parvati, Shiva replaced his head with an elephant’s. Celebrated privately till 1893. Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak made it a public event in Maharashtra to unite people against British rule. British had banned political gatherings, so Tilak used Ganesh Utsav as cover for meetings. Significance*: Ganesha = lord of new beginnings, arts, sciences. Festival promotes community bonding.
