Janmashtami

Janmashtami

1 Day

Overview

Celebrated on the 8th day of Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada month, usually Aug-Sep. As per mythology, Krishna was born ∼5000 years ago in Mathura to Devaki & Vasudeva. His uncle King Kansa had a prophecy that Devaki’s 8th son would kill him, so he imprisoned them and killed their first 6 children. On Krishna’s birth night, Vasudeva carried baby Krishna across the Yamuna to Gokul, where he was raised by Nanda & Yashoda. Krishna later killed Kansa, fulfilling the prophecy. Symbolizes victory of good over evil. Krishna’s teachings in the Bhagavad Gita emphasize dharma, devotion, and righteousness.
