Overview
Alibaug Beach is the main beach in Alibaug town, Raigad, about 95 km from Mumbai. The name means “Ali’s garden” after a 17th-century Bene Israeli Jew named Ali who had orchards here. Shivaji Maharaj made it a naval base and built Kolaba Fort 1 km offshore in 1680. You can walk to the fort at low tide or take a boat at high tide. The beach has black sand, horse carts, and boat rides, and leads to Kihim, Nagaon, and Kashid. After the 1990s, Alibaug became a villa town for Mumbai’s rich, pushing real estate prices up. The town has temples, synagogues, and Maratha-era cannons showing mixed heritage. Ferries from Gateway to Mandwa + 20 min road make it a quick trip. Alibaug blends history, forts, and beaches in one stop. It’s called “mini-Goa” but keeps a Maharashtrian coastal vibe. Today it’s Raigad’s busiest tourist hub.
